A late spring ice storm caused icy conditions on I-70 and Interstate 225. Sixteen cars were involved in a chain reaction of accidents that sent nine people to the hospital. The accident happened around 6:30 pm on Thursday.

Rescue crews had difficulty accessing the scene because of vehicles stopped and stuck on the ramp. Ambulances took six people to the Medical Center of Aurora and three to the CU Health Sciences Center at Fitzsimons.

It is believed that high speed was a factor in the accident. The ramp that the accident occurred on is known for being a trouble spot during bad weather. Adding to the problems the storm caused was that weather forecasters said the storm would start hours later, so people were not expecting bad driving conditions.
