The harm posed to victims by Colorado HB 1106 was discussed here last week. The bill moved to the senate committee, and was then postponed indefinitely Tuesday by the Senate Local Government Committee on a 3-2 party line vote. Senators Joyce Foster, Irene Aguilar and Jeanne Nicholson voted against the bill and Senators Ellen Roberts (Bill Sponsor) and Bill Cadman (both R’s) voted in favor of the bill. The testimony by Lien Companies, Firefighters, Labor Unions (including the AFL-CIO and the Colorado Education Association) and some medical providers, that the bill would harm the uninsured and all victims, was persuasive.

In support of the bill, the only testifiers were Doctors, Colorado Physicians Company insurance, the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and medical students. How this bill became only about the doctors (who appeared in their white coats) and their malpractice premiums is a mystery as the bill was really about insurance companies and victims. The three Senate Democrats were courageous in their votes and their closing remarks were articulate and powerful. The group, Progress Now, mobilized their members to contact their Senators asking them to vote against the bill and they are due a thank you.
