F.D.A. issues new warnings on diabetes drugs.
The F.D.A. announced today that it will require its most serious safety warning on diabetes drugs Avandia and Actos.
The decision comes more than one year after safety reviewers recommended heftier warnings and comes amid Congressional investigation into why the F.D.A. delayed its warnings about Avandia for years. Avandia carries potential risks of heart attack or other cardivascular problems. Actos may also have the same risks including heart failure. The New England Journal of Medicine recently published editorials raising concerns about the drugs. Hopefully posting larger labels on these products will better inform consumers as to the drugs’ risks and benefits. Will it work? I’ll keep you posted.
