Labels for prescription and over-the-counter proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) will be revised to include new safety information about the possible risk of bone fractures with the use of these medications.

PPIs work by reducing the amount of acid in the stomach by blocking the enzyme in the wall of the stomach that produces acid. The drugs affected by the labeling change include Aciphex, Prevacid, Prilosec, Protonix, Nexium and Zegarid.

The new safety information is based on the agency’s review of several studies that suggest those at greatest risk for bone fractures received high doses of PPIs or used them for more than a year.

You should not stop taking your proton pump inhibitor before talking to your medical doctor.
