Finally! Federal Court for District of Colorado Has New Judge, Full Bench

Comments Off

The U.S. Senate on Tuesday confirmed Judge R. Brooke Jackson’s nomination to the federal bench in Colorado, finally filling the second of two Colorado vacancies deemed "judicial emergencies" because of the overload of casework the fedral court faces.

The long-awaited confirmation gives the U.S. District Court in Denver a full bench for the first time since 2008. Our U.S. Senators, Mark Udall and Michael Bennet ,praised Jackson’s confirmation, they also criticized the lengthy confirmation process and called for changes to ensure judges can be confirmed and seated more quickly.

Jackson has been a judge in the 1st Judicial District, which includes Jefferson and Gilpin counties, since 1998. He served as chief judge since 2003. He has generally been percieved by the plaintiffs bar as always fair and even-handed when presiding over trials.

Colorado’s federal court has seven judgeships. In 2008, two vacancies were created. Udall and Bennet, both Democrats, recommended Jackson and Denver lawyer William Martinez, along with four other candidates, to the White House in 2009. Martinez was confirmed last December.
