Sharing the Road

Comments Off

Much attention is given this time of year, reminding motorists to share the road with bicyclists. But with the number of tickets issued to bicyclists in Denver rising over the past three years, perhaps more reminders to share should target cyclists.

In 2009, a total of 656 tickets were issued, but in 2010 the number jumped to 1,165 and held steady in 2011 at 1,114 tickets. The numbers have steadily risen since 2002, when 138 tickets were issued to cyclists. For the first half of 2012, 275 tickets had been issued. But the big ticket season is just starting, with more tickets written during the summer than the cooler months.

Denver police are conducting safety-enforcement days on the bike path near 16th Street east of downtown. The effort is funded through grant money for traffic enforcement, but officers focus on safety issues in addition to ticketing. To further inform cyclists, the police department is partnering on an educational program in conjunction with BikeDenver and Bicycle Colorado to promote safe riding.
