Removal of Damages Caps Bill Advancing

A mother has made it her mission to make drunk drivers pay for the pain their accidents may cause. She’s backing a bill that would put anyone convicted of a DUI on the hook not only for their victim’s medical bills, but emotional damages. The mother, joined by others impacted by drunken drivers, testified in support of Colorado Senate Bill 107, which would end a cap for damages for pain and suffering in accidents caused by impaired drivers.

The measure passed on a 6-3 vote on Wednesday. One Republican joined Democrats in supporting the bill.

The introduced bill would eliminate the cap on non-economic damages in civil suits brought against drunk drivers. Currently in Colorado the state caps the non-economic damages at $468,000.
